No.44
I missed you last week, I really did. On the Saturday in question, I was on a plane, in airports, in between people and places and things. Going away never fails to unsettle me; usually in a good way, but occasionally in ways that are hard to look in the eye. This time, it was like returning to both a stranger me and a better me—I was uncomfortable because I'd grown. I'd had conversations that had brushed against some of my most rooted beliefs, been forced to admit certain things, defend others. These things are inherently healthy, but in this instance I wasn't sure what I was returning to; my altered self protested at the idea of returning to normal, to before.
THIS THAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG THIS WEEK & WORK:
A single post, which was simply an observation or two with a bit of dilemma thrown in for good measure.
In terms of work, I'm in limbo. Between books, with enough to keep me busy but slightly too much time to feel like I'm actually doing anything. So if you're reading this and thinking 'Oh, I could use an illustration here or there' or if you have creative projects that you reckon I'd like to hear about—send me emails, or carrier pigeons, or just shout really loud. I should probably have made it clearer quite a while ago that I'm much more available for freelance projects these days.
One thing I'm happily able to do is create illustrations for untranslatable words that aren't in Lost in Translation, like the one below. This Japanese word was done for a lovely (lovely!) Norwegian fellow, who gave it to a friend.
THIS WEEK I FELL IN LOVE WITH:
This photo, taken in 1937, from a current exhibition at the London Transport Museum. The caption is 'Passers-by looking at an enamel map outside Strand underground station' and although I can't even put my finger on quite why I like it so much, you are subjected to it anyway.
The end.
The observant among you will have noticed that the dachshund in the newsletter header has been replaced by an unspecified beverage in a cup. It felt better for now, but maybe I will change it every week just to keep you on your toes. This is the end, so although I don't really want to, I'll leave you here.
Farewell, see you next sometime.
