No.121
A few things I have noted during the first eleven days of the year:
1. Not everything needs thinking about/it is hard not to get carried away
2. Almost all of the birds look thin
3. The blossom is too early, how do we let it know this is the case
5. I fear that I am a creature of habits
6. Things must be pushed away in order to have more time to read
7. Only having one scarf and then losing it does not produce a good feeling
8. Might there be a word for never being able to forget certain images i.e. having them appear frequently and at random inside one's head
9. Who decides how much forgetting is too much forgetting
10. Can habits be easily separated into Quiet and Loud categories
11. Wouldn't it be interesting if telescopes got neck ache
12. Everything gets harder
13. Everything gets easier
14. Potatoes will sometimes let you down
15. You will sometimes let him down
16. They will sometimes let you down
17. Let people down gently
WORK-RELATED NEWS:
Things have a tendency of warping quite nonsensically around the turn of a new year, and thoughts seem to move of their own accord in directions not previously considered or desired. This can be good, and then it can be not so good, and trying to maintain a hold on the various strings of thinking that accompany larger-scale projects can feel oddly and consistently similar to holding smalls pool of water in your hands.
As January peels rapidly onwards, I'm keen to pin down hours and days in a way that will allow for the progressing of thoughts that has, in the last few months, felt stubbornly out of reach—as if I have severely over-stretched arms and nothing to show for it. This will, initially, look like finishing book proposals, potentially bringing the count up to four (where currently there are two, only one of those complete, and that one now looking a little shrivelled when compared to the other, seemingly shinier ideas).
THIS WEEK I FELL IN LOVE WITH:
These muted, floral lithographs by US-based, Seoul-born artist Yoonmi Nam.
Miroslav Holub, ‘The Root of the Matter’, Selected Poems (translation Ian Milner & George Theiner)
(I think this also happens to be the biggest argument for poetry.)
The end.
